GERMAN COCKROACH FACT SHEET
The German cockroach is a species of small cockroaches with a flattened body, two dark parallel stripes on the back of the head, six legs, antennae and a pair of wings. Their size varies from 1 to 2 cm and they are recognizable by their brown, dark brown or almost black color.
This species, like its cousins, has wings. However, they can hardly fly or glide when they feel threatened. On the contrary, they are very good at moving with their legs at high speed. The nymphs of these cockroaches are also darker and have a band at the back of the head.
WHAT DO GERMANIC COCKROACHES EAT?
These little intruders are essentially omnivores and scavengers. They can eat anything: meat, garbage, vegetables, starches, sugars and fatty foods. In times of famine, they may resort to food hygiene items, such as soap or toothpaste.
Even when the shortage is severe, they become cannibalistic, devouring each other or their own wings, legs and other carcasses!
LIFE CYCLE AND REPRODUCTION
The lifespan of adult German cockroaches is short. Under the right conditions, they can survive up to 230 days. Quite short, isn’t it? On the other hand, their reproduction rate is extremely high, much higher than that of other species of domestic cockroaches.
These insects can mate 5 to 8 times in 80 days. And the female can produce egg deposits (oothecae) containing up to 50 eggs. Now imagine the number of new roaches! As they hatch, the young hatchlings will reach sexual maturity.
And that’s where things get tricky, because these newly matured adults can conceive 20,000 to 30,000 children in their lifetime! It’s scary, isn’t it? You have to be very afraid of this parasite’s notorious ability to reproduce incredibly fast despite its short lifespan.
WHERE DO GERMAN COCKROACHES HIDE?
You can usually find your nasty invaders in kitchens, near garbage cans, bathrooms, basements, sewer lines and in nooks and crannies near food and water sources.
Since they are nocturnal insects, they rarely appear during the day (unless the infestation is very heavy). When they feel threatened, these cockroaches secrete a repulsive odor that is easy to identify.
And like their parents, they love humidity and heat, which helps them reproduce. Their flattened bodies allow them to hide in tiny places, cracks and crevices between walls and furniture.
In addition, these insects can give off a strong musty odor, especially if many roaches are nesting on your property. Finally, if you see several roaches roaming around at night (or even during the day), you are indeed home to a serious infestation of these vermin.
HOW TO RECOGNIZE A GERMAN COCKROACH INFESTATION?
It is easier to recognize an invasion of these nasty tenants than with other pests. The signs of infestation are more obvious, starting with the appearance of small pigments, dots or dark spots scattered on your furniture, cracks, corners or walls.
These spots are the fecal matter of cockroaches. Disgusting! And their feces are very harmful because of the risk of disease. Other signs you may find are empty egg shells (their egg deposits), an indicator that they have been breeding for a long time.
HOW TO ERADICATE A GERMAN COCKROACH INFESTATION?
To get rid of these horrible invaders, there are different methods and treatments that you can apply yourself. In addition, you will need a lot of time and patience, as they are very slippery insects and, due to their nocturnal habits, you will hardly be able to fight them during the day.
You need to be very clear that you need to eliminate all their nests to avoid any spread. And as long as the infestation is not that developed, you can try to do it by yourself.
But in excessive cases, the best thing to do is to call a pest control company like us, AKL Exterminator.
Our comprehensive services are the best in all of Quebec for household pest extermination. Our exterminators will get rid of all the Germanic roaches in your residential or commercial property! So let’s review some ways to get rid of German cockroaches:
KEEP YOUR HOME CLEAN AND REPAIRED.
The first step is to perform a constant cleaning of your property. Eliminate all food sources, moisture and dumps. It is also essential to seal all entrances and cracks to prevent cockroaches from accessing them.
You should check and repair any cracks, holes or leaks, especially in pipes. Avoid having piles of garbage and light all unoccupied rooms. Also, disinfect all surfaces where German cockroaches can hide, especially in bathrooms and kitchens.
To control this disgusting pest, you can purchase German cockroach pesticides from licensed distributors. From baits to pesticides, you can place them in strategic locations so that the roaches consume these chemicals, spread them to their colonies and die.
Baits are the most effective products, as these insects will eat them and poison other members of their family. You can also apply pesticides directly to them, but try to get non-repellent insecticides, insect growth regulators and pheromone traps.
Remember to be extra careful, keeping pesticides out of reach of your children and pets. Avoid mixing them together to avoid unnecessary contamination.
HIRE QUALIFIED EXTERMINATORS
In many cases, pesticides or baits will not work because cockroaches can evade them or develop resistance to them. In such situations, don’t hesitate to contact us: AKL Exterminator! We are the most recognized pest control company in Quebec!
