AKL EXTERMINATOR, EXPERTS IN WEEVIL ERADICATION
Weevils are one of the most harmless household pests you can deal with. They are not harmful to your health or that of your loved ones, they do not destroy your property, they do not gnaw furniture and they do not attack your pets. In addition, they do not bite, sting or carry diseases.
Great, right? However, these insects can wreak havoc on your outdoor spaces, such as gardens and orchards, as they can damage your plants. Also, indoors, such as in closets and storerooms, they are capable of infesting the seeds and grains you have stored.
Rather than a very damaging pest, they are an occasional nuisance that can appear at certain seasons and devour your pantry supplies, rendering some of those foods inedible. Especially if you own a store or business, this can affect you greatly.
So don’t risk waiting any longer and take immediate action against weevils by exterminating them yourself or by calling in professional services. Don’t let these intruders take over your supplies.
And if you are already facing this tedious pest and want to eradicate it, then you are in the right place! You can call on our effective domestic pest control services at AKL Exterminator. We are the best pest exterminators in all of Quebec.

WEEVIL FACT SHEET
Weevils are small insects of the order Coleoptera. They are tiny beetles from 2 to 10 mm in size, of various colors (black or red) and shapes (elongated, oval and flat-backed).
But what characterizes them is their long cylindrical snout at the end of which are the mouth and two antennas. They have six legs, a body in three parts, and as they are beetles, two of their four wings form a protective shell, like ladybugs.
Depending on the species, some have a short, stout snout, others have a thin snout as long as their body. Weevils use this snout with their antennae that fold over it to bore deep holes in seeds, plants, wood and even nuts.
WHAT DO WEEVILS EAT?
There are several types of weevils, each with its own preferred food. Some prefer to feed on pollen and nectar from flowers, others eat the buds or leaves of certain trees and, of course, grain and cereal pests.
That is why they are known according to the food they infest, such as the rice weevil, the pea weevil, etc. These insects are known as pantry pests, as they invade supplies to consume a variety of cereals, nuts, beans, seeds and other similar foods.
The unique feature of these insects is that they live inside the food, establishing their nests and the females reproduce inside the grains.
REPRODUCTION AND LIFE CYCLE OF WEEVILS
The average life span of these insects is short, from 2 to 4 months, depending on the species and environmental factors. In the case of species considered as pantry pests, the females make holes in seeds and grains and deposit their eggs inside the food.
When the larva hatches, it will feed for a month on the contents of the grain, then emerge from the grain, develop into a pupa and become an adult. And incredibly, when the male weevils emerge, they immediately look for a female to mate with. Terrific!
WHERE ARE WEEVILS FOUND?
Weevils are usually found in outdoor plants, orchards and gardens. Indoors, they can be found in pantries, cupboards or bins where you store your grains, seeds and nuts.
HOW TO DETECT THE PRESENCE OF WEEVILS?
Unfortunately, it is very difficult to recognize the infestation of these insects because they are usually identified when there is already a colony of them in their adult stage. It is almost impossible to notice their eggs in garbage cans or grain packages.
This pest usually enters your property through food products or supplies you bring in. Often, food and grain packages can be infested with eggs that are unrecognizable to the naked eye. And when it’s too late, you’ll notice that your food products are full of hundreds of these bugs.
Other times, these insects may enter your property from the outside, such as in yards or gardens, sneaking through cracks or gaps that lead indoors. They will crawl along the walls or floor until they reach your grain stores, where you can spot them.
HOW TO GET RID OF WEEVILS?
Once you recognize an infestation of these beetles, it is relatively simple to get rid of them. As AKL Exterminator, we will suggest some measures to eradicate this pest on your own. And in case of a more serious infestation, don’t hesitate to contact us!
The first thing to do is to throw away all infested material. Carefully dispose of all food packages, bags and bins with weevils outside your property, isolating these insects so they don’t come back.
Eliminate all sources of contaminated food. Next, carefully inspect every item in your pantry, cupboard or storage room to see if these bugs have spread to other foods. You should also get rid of any foods that contain eggs.
If you find weevils outside, on your walls or around your furniture, spray them! And when you have them, vacuum the outside of your property. Also caulk any cracks or holes where they get in. Another method is to trap them in shallow tubs of water placed around pantries.
Pesticides are usually not necessary (and commercially available pesticides are not very effective against weevils). And if the infestation is out of control, you can apply these products in the foundation or near where you store the grain, but never apply pesticides inside the packages!
Since they are temporary pests, they can sometimes disappear on their own and their presence is not an indicator that they will return the following year, although this depends on the species.
HOW TO PREVENT A WEEVIL INFESTATION?
To prevent the sudden appearance of these pests in your pantries and stores, as AKL Exterminator, we recommend the following prevention tips:
- Pay special attention to the grains, grain products and nuts you purchase before storing them.
- If there is any doubt about the existence of these insects in your diet, freeze grains and seeds for at least a week (or store them permanently in the freezer) to kill eggs and adults. AKs do not tolerate extreme temperatures.
- Try to buy supplies in small quantities and eat your cereal at reasonable times so that it is not overrun by insects.
- Every 2-3 months, take out the contents of your cabinets and closets, and vacuum carefully.
- Wash your storage containers and bins frequently with soap and hot water.
- Ideally, store your grains in clear, airtight containers so you can examine the contents at a glance for the presence of these insects.
- Avoid storing foods with holes in their packaging and bins, as small beetles can be introduced or transferred into glass or plastic jars.
